Michael Batty & Kristofir Dean – “Line & Colour”
Newzones is pleased to present “Line & Colour”, a two-person exhibition featuring Michael Batty (Vancouver) and Kristofir Dean (Toronto).
Line and colour are two key components in the visual language of abstract art, though the way in which they are used can vary greatly by artist. Batty’s paintings illuminate the importance of negative space against his precise and exacting strokes of colour. Motion is created and perceived by the varying use of the line, giving the paintings a kinetic nature. Comparatively, Dean’s geometric paintings are completely saturated in colour and create optical 3-D effects with his use of the line. Surfaces are built up to create the illusion of a sculptural presence, invading the viewer’s space. By juxtaposing Batty and Dean’s paintings, “Line and Colour” will create a fluid narrative of different uses of the seemingly “same” elements.
Michael Batty graduated from Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver with a major in painting. He attended the renowned artist workshops in Emma Lake, Saskatchewan, and studied printmaking at The Art Institute at Capilano College in Vancouver. Batty’s paintings can be found in collections around the world, including the Waldorf Astoria in Beijing, China, W Guangzhou, China, Four Seasons, Dubai, UAE, and Bank of Montreal in Calgary and Toronto, to name a few.
Kristofir Dean holds a BFA from Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCADU). His paintings have been shown internationally, including Australia and Hong Kong, and can be found in private collections throughout North America.
From afar, Dean’s paintings appear as 3-D objects, challenging the viewer’s perspective and visual space.
Opening Reception: Saturday, March 17, 2018: 2-4 PM. Michael Batty in attendance. Exhibition runs from Saturday, March 17, to Saturday, May 5.
